5 Ways a Lead Magnet Grows Your Business

The internet is filled with enticing email opt-in offers such as “get my free step-by-step guide to clean eating” or “download my free checklist for annual lawn care.” Chances are, you’ve offered up your email address for a digital freebie or two, also known as a lead magnet or lead generator, and now your inbox is flooded with ongoing emails from those businesses or brands.

What is a Lead Magnet?

A lead magnet is a free piece of digital content that a business offers. The idea is to offer value to viewers before ever asking for a sale. Lead magnets are part of a business’s content marketing strategy as they help you attract new eyeballs, or leads, to your business.

How a Lead Magnet Works

  1. Business creates a valuable free piece of content

  2. Business creates a sign-up form to download this information and pushes out on website, social, etc.

  3. An interested viewer sees the offer and enters their email address

  4. An email is sent (typically automated) to your new subscriber delivering the free piece of content they signed up for.

  5. Business now has a new warm lead on their email list to launch campaigns to, etc.

Ready to see how beneficial these lead magnets are for your business? Let’s jump in!

5 Ways a Lead Magnet Grows Your Business

Still wondering if a lead magnet is a good investment of your time and resources? A lead magnet is an effective marketing tool for a number of reasons.

  1. It provides valuable information to your target audience.

  2. It positions you and your brand as an expert in your industry.

  3. It incorporates relevant and natural CTAs within the content to deepen the relationship with reader.

  4. It builds your email list (if email is required for download–which it should be!).

  5. It’s an opportunity to be present, relevant, and top-of-mind for new and existing audience.

Examples of Lead Magnets

  • a free masterclass or course

  • a free checklist

  • a free workbook

  • a free email challenge

  • or basically any free content that you share with your audience in exchange for an email address

Tools I Use to Create PDF Lead Magnets

  • Canva: Super simple and free template-based graphic design platform; they may have some templates you can manipulate for a one-page freebie, or you can create your own design.

  • Creative Market: I purchased a $40 workbook template here for my Canva account. This saved me a ton of time designing a multi-page PDF, as Canva does not have any of these pre-built. Level up the look of your business and invest in a template you can use over and over again.

  • OptinMonster: I’m still learning how to use this platform, but I was able to set up a pop-up on my website advertising my lead magnet in exchange for an email sign-up.

You will also want to sign up for an email platform and create a campaign that will link up to your lead magnet email acquisitions. Keep your eyes peeled for another post (to come soon!) on email marketing strategy once you have a list built.

And that’s it! Lead magnets are a great way to attract your ideal clients with information and tools they crave.
