The Copy Intensive Isn’t for Every Business

As much as we’d love for every website to launch with custom copy, there are two clear scenarios when our Copy Intensive is not a good fit.

Your client is just starting out and hasn’t sold anything yet.

In my early days of freelancing, I would work with ANYONE who would pay me. But now our studio works with clients who we know we can help. If your client is building a brand on speculation (as in: they have not sold anything yet), it can be very hard for me to mine the information I need from them. While typically this type of client doesn’t have the budget to invest in custom copywriting, sometimes they do from a previous career. Let’s discuss any nuances about start-ups and when they are a good fit.

Your client isn’t available for calls or doesn’t want to collaborate on messaging.

Over the last 7 years, I’ve had two clients who didn’t want to partake in any information sharing or strategy calls and wanted to cancel the project because they didn’t love the copy on the first draft. I share that, embarrassing as it was, because I’m passionate about setting proper expectations with clients about hiring a copywriter: that while it takes a huge load off their plate and contributes to a great ROI, it does require participation from them, and revisions are a normal part of the process. You book your project with us. Once you’re a partner of ours, you can book your client’s project on our booking link and select our start date, or just email Nikki directly.


We kick off the project. You share any preceding strategy work and questionnaires, and we connect with your client to schedule messaging strategy calls. You’re cc’d and invited to everything (although if you're like most of our designers, after the first project you’ll be happily doing other things). We dig deep into storytelling, message strategy, and website journey, crafting copy that resonates and converts.

You receive approved, design-ready copy. Clients sign off on content through a clear process that keeps momentum flowing. You get approved content so you or your team can confidently start design with minimal, if not zero, copy changes.

  • We begin working with your client before you start website design. Our goal is to have final, approved content in your (or your designer’s) hands before the scheduled design start date to keep everything moving forward. If your studio also offers brand design, our white label SEO copywriting can happen simultaneously. We’ll discuss your onboarding process and make sure we have a smooth process before we book our first project together.

  • Great question! We have designers integrate this service both ways. On the proposal, most designers are making a professional recommendation to invest in professional copy support based on what they know about the client’s goals and internal capacity and talents. There is definitely education that happens during the sales conversation about the value of integrating white label SEO copywriting into the new site.

  • Here’s how I tell our partners to determine which level of support their client needs:

    • Is their existing site content pretty accurate and aligned with their brand, but you and/or the client wants a polish up and optimization so it serves them better? This is a good fit for a Copy Edit.

    • Is their existing site content outdated and inaccurate? Do they not have the time or bandwidth to invest in drafting new content? Is their current messaging forcing them to compete on price and not lead with the value and impact of what they do? Is it important to the client to make sure their site is done correctly (optimized for search and conversion) and fully tailored to their new brand and/or direction? This is a good fit for a Copy Intensive.
